What's new in NotchDude 1.10
Update, 8 October 2026: Since NotchDude 1.11.4, Connect Browser… is in Settings › Music, which also shows which browsers are connected. The steps and image below describe its earlier place in Settings › Widgets.
NotchDude has always shown what's playing in Spotify and Apple Music. But plenty of what we listen to lives in a browser tab: a YouTube mix, a conference talk, a podcast on a website. NotchDude 1.10, and four quick updates after it, bring all of that into the notch, in whichever browser you use. Here's everything that changed.
Your browser, in the notch
Play a video on YouTube or a track on YouTube Music and it appears in Music, right beside Spotify and Apple Music, with its title, channel, artwork, and progress. From the notch you can play and pause, skip 10 seconds back or forward, jump to the previous or next video when the site has one, and mute. With Pro, you can also scrub anywhere and set the volume. One click on the open button takes you to the tab that's playing.
It works with other sites too: open one with audio or video, click the NotchDude Media button in your browser's toolbar, and choose Turn on. The full guide to browser media walks through it.
Safari, Firefox, Chrome, and every Chromium browser
The free NotchDude Media extension does the connecting, and it now covers almost any browser on a Mac:
- Safari: the extension comes inside NotchDude. There's nothing to download; just turn it on in Safari's settings.
- Chrome, Arc, Brave, Edge, Vivaldi, Opera, and Chromium: one extension from the Chrome Web Store works in all of them (1.10.3).
- Firefox: a version for Firefox is on its way to Firefox Add-ons, and NotchDude is already set up to connect to it (1.10.3).
There are no pairing codes and nothing to configure. NotchDude recognises which browser is playing on its own (1.10.2), so it can label the music correctly and bring the right app forward.
Set up in under a minute
Choose Connect browser… in Music (it shows when nothing is playing) or in Settings › Widgets. Pick Chrome, Firefox, or Safari, and the window walks you through three short steps, with a button that takes you straight to the right extension store or Safari setting. It now opens in its own window in the middle of the screen, rather than tucked behind the notch (1.10.0).
A simpler extension popup
Click the NotchDude Media toolbar button and you now see only what matters for the tab in front of you (1.10.2): whether NotchDude is connected, the site you're on, and a single Turn on or Turn off button. YouTube and YouTube Music are always on, and turning a site off reloads it so the media stops reporting straight away. The old explanation text, the second button, and the browser picker are gone; NotchDude works the browser out by itself.
A tidier Music widget
The browser name under the title is now just a label (1.10.4). It only turns into a menu when there's something to switch to, like a second tab playing in another browser, or a YouTube video waiting while Spotify plays. Pick a tab, or leave it on Automatic to follow whatever is playing.
A refreshed welcome window
The window that greets new installs now matches notchdude.com: a deep black background with soft grey glows, and each feature shown as a crisp white symbol on a coloured tile, so nothing looks muddy on black (1.10.0). Now Playing in the tour mentions browser media too.
Smaller touches
- The app icon in About tilts in 3D as you move the pointer over it (it stays still with Reduce Motion on).
- Album and video artwork now fills its square neatly instead of spilling over the edges.
- The extension shows the NotchDude name everywhere (1.10.1).
